Ride and Stride 9th September 2017

Ride and Stride 2017 – 9th September

Ride and Stride is fast approaching; and St Mary’s has recently received a grant of £10,000 from the Sussex Historic Churches Trust, so it would be great to have a big turnout for this fun event…There are lots of options, including: participating as a (sponsored) walker or rider; manning the church; or simply sponsoring one of our riders/walkers or those manning the church.  Please do sign up on the sheets at the back of church and pick up the information leaflets there.  For more information please contact Simon Briggs via the church office.

Riding or striding…This year, you can join Simon for either a short tour of the participating churches in Horsham, and for the more active, a wider ranging route taking in Nuthurst, Partridge Green, Shipley, Coolhurst and Billingshurst; or make up your own route…

…or toddling 2017 also brings another exciting and innovative option – a sponsored toddle for our younger members (and Guy, apparently).  We’ve devised a short 30min circuit that takes in 6 churches around Horsham town centre.  Contact Jo Parry via the church office.

Manning St Mary’s

Volunteers are needed please to man the church on the day of the Ride and Stride event.  There’s a rota at the back of the church, split into one hour slots.  Please try to find an hour to support this valuable endeavour and sign up on the sheet.  The requirements are very straightforward – just logging riders/striders in.  if you can help for an hour, please add your name and contact number in the appropriate time slot

The money

Notwithstanding the great recent fund raising efforts, and the SHCT grant, we still face a huge challenge maintaining our lovely buildings, and every penny raised really helps – don’t forget, the money raised by our members is split 50/50 between St Mary’s and SHCT, so we benefit twice – first from the funds raised; and secondly, by supporting SHCT, we hope to access their grants; and the recent grant was made to us, acknowledging our support over the years for the Ride and Stride event

Conservation and Renewal Project – update June 2016

Conservation – As you may be aware St. Mary’s needs to undertake major work to repair and conserve our fine building, especially our roof.  This kind of work is very expensive to carry out and following discussions with our Church Architect we have decided to carry out the work in a series of phases.  We have begun fund raising and are in the process of making applications to grant awarding bodies to help us on our way.  We recently made a bid for funding to the ‘Listed Places of Worship Roof Repair Fund’ to carry out some urgent repair work to our Church roof, we await a decision.  Even if we are successful we will still need to raise a significant amount of money, something in the region of £500,000, to carry out all that needs to be done.

Renewal – Our plan is that one of the phases of work will also include improving our facilities inside the church.  Thank you to all those people who completed the questionnaire earlier this year, looking at our current church facilities.  We are now looking forward to our ‘Vision Day’, on Sunday 3rd July, when, as a congregation, we will explore how St. Mary’s Church can best prepare for our future ministry in Horsham.  We must then look to discern how our church buildings and facilities can most suitably meet our future ministry needs.

All of these phases of work require money to carry out both the necessary (Conservation) and our vision ministry (Renewal) works.  If you would like to donate to our Conservation and Renewal Project you can do so via our on-line giving page – http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/team/stmarysconservationandrenewal

Or donations can also be sent to:

If for any unforeseen reason we are unable to proceed with the planned works, or there are surplus funds left over, we will use the donations to help with our day to day running expenses of the church. Many thanks for your support!

Conservation Project

May 2016: An update to the news post below – the questionnaires have been processed and we are holding a vision day in church on 3rd July 2016 to help continue formulating our strategy for the future.

February 2016: A big thank you to all those people who have replied to the Facilities Questionnaire in recent weeks.  Over 100 people have filled out either the paper or on-line questionnaire.
All the data is now being processed and we hope to have a report ready for the St. Mary’s AGM 13th March.

January 2016: Did you know? …. The church family and the wider community has the opportunity to have their say on potential alterations to the interior of the church building. Some of you will be aware of the aims of the Conservation Project, outlined in leaflets which have been available in church since April 2015. There are three key areas on which we wish to focus: north phase roof repair project; south phase roof repair project and the improved facilities project. The Conservation and Renewal Project Team launched a questionnaire recently which is designed to gauge the views of the people who really matter – you. Questionnaires are available at the back of church or online via https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/J6VXP6F The deadline for responses is 31st January 2016 and we would love to hear what you think.

“Unforgettable…”

Horsham Concert to Celebrate Unforgettable Wartime Heroes

St Mary’s Church, Horsham is hosting a unique, fundraising concert to remember the heroes of the first and second world wars. The concert entitled “Unforgettable” will be an uplifting and entertaining evening of music and verse from the time, inspired by wartime fortitude, heroism and sacrifice. It will feature students from the Performing Arts Department at Collyers, Berkshire Brass Ensemble and St Mary’s Church Choir.

The concert will be held at St Mary’s Church, Causeway, Horsham, on remembrance weekend, Saturday 8th November at 7.30pm.  All money raised from ticket sales will go towards fundraising efforts for ‘Help for Heroes’, the national charity for wounded members of the Armed Forces, and for ‘Friends of St Mary’s’, for the upkeep of the Historic Church Building.  Tickets cost £10 and are available from the Church Office (on 01403 253762), Waterstones in Horsham and from Horsham Museum.

The audience can look forward to dramatic recitals of some of the best known poetry and readings of the times, as well as memorable music, including Vaughan William’s ‘Agincourt Song’ and wartime favourites ‘A long way to Tipperary’ and ‘Puttin’ on the Ritz’.  There will also be a display in the Church kindly provided by Horsham Museum, showcasing memorabilia from the Great Wars.

Mark Watts, Chair of Friends of St Mary’s commented; “We are thrilled to be able to bring this concert to St Mary’s Church in Horsham. The concert, which takes place on the eve of Remembrance Sunday, promises to be a memorable evening which celebrates the courage and self-sacrifice of the heroes who fought in the Great Wars. It will also be an opportunity to raise much needed funds for our own modern day heroes in the armed forces, through charity ‘Help for Heroes’, as well as supporting the work of ‘Friends of St Mary’s’ to help maintain our wonderful Church building.

Friends of St Mary’s

Thanks to a generous gift from the Friends of St Mary’s we now have some beautiful new pew cushions on the first five rows on each side of the nave aisle.  The Friends have also agreed to pay for a second similar batch of cushions.
